Discover the Science Behind Gelcoat Manufacturing
Your door isn’t painted — it’s born with its colour built in.
From liquid to lasting protection
Every composite door starts life inside a two-part mould, a bit like a giant waffle iron.
Before any fibreglass or resin is added, the inside of that mould is sprayed with a liquid gelcoat — a colourful, glossy mixture made from polyester resin and special pigments.
When the door is cured under controlled heat, something incredible happens: the gelcoat chemically bonds with the fibreglass layers poured in behind it.
They don’t just stick together — they fuse into one solid piece.
That’s why composite doors don’t need painting — their colour and protection are built into the structure itself.
The “skin” that defines strength
Once cured, that thin outer layer becomes the door’s permanent skin.
It’s completely seamless, smooth, and watertight — designed to resist impact, UV light, and weathering.
In fact, the same process is used to make boats, wind turbine blades, and aircraft parts because it creates a finish that’s both beautiful and extremely tough.
It’s science and craftsmanship combined: a material that can handle everything from freezing rain to summer heat without warping or peeling.
Why it still needs care
Even though gelcoats are incredibly strong, they’re still vulnerable to the same forces that wear down any protective layer — UV radiation, air pollution, and time.
Over the years, sunlight breaks down the surface resin molecules, leaving the gelcoat dry, chalky, and faded.
That’s why PMD treatments are designed to restore and feed this surface, not just shine it up.
Our system gently replenishes the lost oils, revives depth of colour, and leaves a clean, sealed barrier that helps the gelcoat keep doing its job.
A process worth preserving
The gelcoat on your door isn’t just a finish — it’s the result of precision engineering and chemical science.
It took heat, pressure, timing, and perfect ratios to create that flawless skin, and a few minutes of the wrong cleaner or neglect can undo years of protection.
By keeping that layer healthy with the right products, you’re honouring the craftsmanship that went into making it — and ensuring it lasts as long as it was designed to.
In simple terms
Your composite door wasn’t painted; it was born with its colour.
That colour is locked inside a layer only fractions of a millimetre thick — fused into the door forever.
And just like anything that works hard every day, it needs the occasional care to keep it strong, bright, and beautiful.
