Why Porch Doors Still Need Protection
Even when they’re sheltered, your door’s still fighting the elements.
Hidden damage you can’t always see
It’s easy to think that a door fitted inside a porch or behind glass doesn’t need protecting — after all, it’s not getting rained on, right?
But the truth is, porch doors go through just as much stress as those directly exposed to the weather — just in a different way.
Inside a porch, the temperature can swing dramatically throughout the day.
When sunlight hits the glass, heat builds up quickly — then drops sharply once the sun moves.
That constant rise and fall can cause the gelcoat to expand and contract hundreds of times a day, pulling tiny amounts of oil and flexibility out of the surface.
Over time, this leads to dryness, fine cracking, and pigment fatigue — a dull, patchy look that no amount of cleaning will fix.
Heat cycling — the silent problem
On a sunny afternoon, the air inside a porch can reach 35–40°C, then fall to under 10°C overnight.
That’s a temperature swing of 25–30 degrees, happening day after day, all year long.
Each time, the gelcoat flexes and relaxes, gradually becoming brittle.
This process, known as thermal cycling, is one of the main reasons even “protected” doors start to fade or feel rough long before their time.
It’s slow, silent, and almost invisible until the damage is done.
Why a PMD treatment still matters
Our treatments are designed to nourish and stabilise the gelcoat — not just protect it from UV light, but also keep it flexible during these constant temperature changes.
By replacing the oils that heat and time draw out, we help prevent the surface from drying, shrinking, and cracking.
Even if your door never sees rain, sunlight coming through glass still carries UV radiation — enough to fade pigments and dry the surface.
A PMD treatment acts like sunscreen and conditioner in one, keeping your door’s colour richer for longer.
The takeaway
Being indoors doesn’t mean being safe.
Your porch door faces its own set of hidden pressures — trapped heat, UV glare through glass, and daily thermal stress.
Left untreated, these effects can make a door age just as fast as one fully exposed to the weather.
Regular care keeps that gelcoat supple and sealed, so your door stays smooth, glossy, and colour-true for years to come — porch or not.
